Choosing the Right Sized Tank to Fit Your Needs

The right size propane tank can help you save on your energy bills by controlling how often you need to fill up. Calculating how much propane your home uses is often our first step in advising you on what size propane tank you will need.

Variety of Tank Sizez to Fit Your Needs

A Full Range of Tank Sizes

500 Gallon Tank

The 500-gallon tank is the most common size propane tank for residential propane use. It is often used for home heating, generator powering, cooking, pool heating, and more.

1,000 Gallon Tanks

These tanks do everything that a 500-gallon tank does but are twice as big. They are often used for agricultural and commercial uses but are also a great choice for heating larger homes.

420 Pound or 100 Gallon Tanks

420 lb. tanks are large enough to be used for a variety of commercial purposes. However, these tanks can have many residential uses as well such as home heating, hot water and pool heat.

100 Pound Tank

100 lb. tanks are a good choice if you have smaller appliances or heating devices that use propane. For instance, many people rely on 100 lb. propane tanks to power their gas cooking ranges, as well as their indoor fireplaces.

20 Pound Tanks

20 lb. tanks are often used for gas grilling and hold a little less than 5 gallons of propane when full. These tanks are not filled on site.

33 Pound Tanks

33 lb. tanks are commonly used for forklifts and are available for other specific needs.

Same-day Excavation, Installation, and Propane Gas Hook-up

When you need a new propane tank, you don’t want to make it a week-long event. A drawn-out installation process interferes with your daily life. Your propane supplier should recognize that.

At Kauffman Gas, we will work to coordinate your tank installation quickly so it can be a one-and-done process. Both above ground and underground tanks are installed within 4-5 hours on the scheduled date.

One-Stop-Shop Makes Underground Installations Fast

Kauffman Gas is one of the few gas suppliers in the Delaware and Pennsylvania region that owns and operates their own excavation equipment. This means we can excavate and install your underground or above ground propane tank and hook-up the gas service all on the same day

This means you aren’t left without propane service or with an unsightly mess in your yard. We also lay grass seed to ensure your yard grows back to normal.

Zero Service Interruption With Temporary Tanks
We install temporary 100 gallon and 100lb tanks above ground until your underground tank installation can be scheduled. Temporary tanks ensure you never have an interruption in service.

Underground tank installations are usually performed April-October for easier excavation.

Buying vs. Leasing Your Propane Tank: That is the Question

Many customers lease their propane gas tank from Kauffman Gas. This provides them with the peace of mind and convenience that we regularly service and are responsible for the condition of their tank. However, some customers prefer the flexibility of owning their tank outright.

Kauffman Gas happily helps customers maintain their tank whether they lease or own. However, we want to inform you of the pros and cons of either.

Pros of Leasing a Propane Tank

Leasing means you can bypass the pricey upfront investment of buying
Kauffman Gas is responsible for regular maintenance, at no extra cost to you

Pros of Owning a Propane Tank

You have the freedom to purchase propane from any company
Avoid any tank leasing or rental fees

Cons of Leasing a Propane Tank

You must purchase the propane tank or facilitate the removal if you choose to switch propane gas companies at any point
Leasing a propane tank from a local supplier means you don't have the option of browsing around for lower rates

Cons of Owning a Propane Tank

Upfront costs can be staggering (well over $1,000 on average)
You are responsible for tank maintenance and liable for any accidents that may occur

Choosing Between Above or Underground Propane Tanks

Above Ground Propane Tanks

Any size tank can be above ground
Above ground propane tanks stand a few inches off the ground and are bolted down at the feet
Above ground tanks do well standing up against heavy flooding

Underground Propane Tanks

More aesthetically pleasing and can more easily be hidden with shrubbery and landscaping
Underground propane gas tanks can raise the value of your property
500-gallon tanks and 1,000-gallon tanks are most commonly placed underground

Inefficient hot water heaters can rake up your yearly costs and provide less consistent heat.
